TOM BATTAGLIA

DIRECTOR OF TENNIS

Coach Tom Battaglia has served as the Director of Tennis at the Maplewood Little Club since 2008, developing a vibrant tennis program for players of all ages and skill levels. Each season, Coach Tom leads the popular MLC clinics and summer camp and coordinates private lessons, tournaments and events for members.

Coach Tom is a United States Tennis Association (USTA) Eastern Zonal coach (14 and under) and a National Championship coach (12 and under).  He is also a USTA Early Developmental Coach for 10 and Under Tennis, working with players from Long Island, New York, and New Jersey.

 

He is also a certified United States Professional Tennis Association (RSPA) Elite certified coach. In January of 2020 Coach Tom was also named the USPTA New Jersey District Regional President for the Middle States Division.


Coach Tom is currently the Director of Tennis at Newark Academy, where he coaches the boys and girls teams. His boys team is one of the best in the country, and is currently ranked #18 in the world for high school boys tennis.


Prior to Newark Academy, Tom was the Head Coach at Rider University (NCAA D1) for both the men’s and women’s teams. He was the first coach in Men’s Tennis history to ever win the MAAC Coach of the year award (2023) and the first coach to ever guide the men to the playoffs in the MAAC Championship era (20 years).

Tom is also the co-owner of Crestmont Indoor Tennis, overseeing a staff of nine professionals, teaching youth players and managing all aspects of the four-court facility.  In addition to working with players of all ages, he organizes and runs a number of charitable events in support of the Special Olympics. 
 
Tom worked in a similar role at the Fairfield Racquet Club from 2003-2014, cultivating and growing all aspects of the tennis program in his extensive stay at that facility.
 
Tom currently resides in New Providence, NJ with his three boys, Jeffrey, Tyler and Aaron.

Lisa brings over 25 years of teaching experience to MLC. She has taught players of all levels, including nationally ranked Juniors and was a Sectional Director for USTA’s Area Training Center. She was the co-owner of the Indoor Sports Pavilion in Randolph and has been the Director of Tennis for multiple NJ area clubs.

As a player, Lisa was a nationally ranked Junior and attended Clemson University on a full scholarship. She was a 4 year ACC Champion with her highest singles ranking in the top 40 and as high as 13th in doubles in the  NCAA Division One rankings. Lisa has held world rankings in singles and in doubles. Lisa has become a practitioner of a technique called EFT which uses a combination of acupressure points and cognitive therapy to help athletes reach their peak performance under pressure.
